Dog Paw Licking...

Well it's now October.... I can't believe how time fly's! Allot has gone on since May! Apparently it was the year for record breaking summer rain and Natural disasters. Hard to believe NY had an Earth Quake, Hurricane, Tornado and major devastating flooding all in the same month...CRAZY, huh!

I think all this moister is causing more fungus, mold spur issues and reeking havoc for us allergy sufferer's... I myself am a spring and fall 24 hr Zyrtec "prescriber",  I seriously couldn't live without it!

I wish it were as easy for Gracie (my 4 yrs old Boston terrier),  she also suffers from allergies and unfortunetly it's not as easy to figure out what triggers hers or even how to treat them.  I know when she starts licking her paws it's time to get out the Benadryl (a.k.a. Diphenhydramine). Yes...believe it or not, The majority of veterinarians allow the use of Diphenhydramine in dogs as well as cats; this medicine is used quite frequently in canines.

Most common Reasons for using Benadryl for Dogs:

  • Insect/flea bites.
  • Skin irritation and/or itching.
  • Anxiety and Insomnia in dogs.
  • Vaccination reactions (example: Lyme disease shot).
  • Eye/ear infections.
  • Car sickness/vomiting.
  • Wasp/bee/hornet stings (includes the inside of the mouth).
  • Bites from some snakes.
  • Asthma, as well as inhalant allergies (such as pollen or dust).
  • Hay fever, runny/stuffy nose, and coughing/sneezing.
  • Muscle tremors.
  • Irritation at the dog's tail base.
  • Bodily knots or lumps with fluid.

Benadryl absorbs and acts fast. Often, the effect can be seen within thirty minutes. However, in certain instances, it may take up to a week to see a notable result. Like any medication you need to take precasion and make sure you use the proper dosage and watch your pet to make sure they are not suffering from side effects and always consult with your vet.

The Safety of using Benadryl for Pets
Generally, Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is exceptionally safe for dogs; however, there are a certain number of serious precautions:
  • Diphenhydramine should not be administered to dogs with certain conditions: cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, prostatic disease, and hyperthyroidism.
  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may not be appropriate for a puppy. If you do have a puppy, please be sure to consult with your veterinarian first.
  • Only the pure med is safe for dogs, where the active ingredient is only Diphenhydramine. The Decongestant or Colds/Sinus versions aren't acceptable.
  • Liquid Benadryl is high in alcohol content and is not safe for most animals.
  • Children's Benadryl may be alcohol and sugar free; however, it contains sodium, and this could be detrimental to dogs with certain health concerns.
  • It shouldn't be used simultaneously with decongestants and painkillers. It can also interact with other medicines, and possibly be fatal. Should your pet be taking any other types of medication - it's important that you first ask your veterinarian about using Benadryl. Generally, Diphenhydramine is considered safe for your pet when taking flea and heartworm tablets, as well as steroids.
  • It's extremely important that the prescribed dosage is not exceeded.
I recommend using small amounts of the medication first, observe your pet closely for any reaction to it and... highly recommend talking to your veterinarian before giving any amount of Benadryl to a dog.

Benadryl Dosage for Pets There're 2 ways for determining the proper dosage when administering Benadryl to a pet, and I will state them below:
1. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is administered at a dosage of 1 milligram per 1 pound of the animal's weight 3 times per day (i.e. every 8 hrs). An example: a 30 lb dog should be given 30 mg of this medication three times per day.
2. Dogs are categorized by three weight class categories; the med is taken 3 times daily, every 8 hours:
  • 30 pounds and under pets: 10mg
  • 30-50 pound pets: 25 mg
  • 50 pounds and over pets: 50mg
As you can see, the dosage depends on the animal's weight, and are just the general recommendations. To determine the proper amount of Benadryl for your dog/cat, talk to a professional veterinarian. Too little of a dosage may not help at all, while exceeding the proper dosage may be dangerous. Also, a veterinarian will help you to determine a frequency for administering the medication, such as every four, eight, or twelve hours. In addition, a vet will ask questions for determining if it is an allergic reaction that your pet is having or something else. Should your current financial situation not permit a paid visit to your vet, you should still be able to get free advice by phone.

Side Effects in Pets
Common side-effects include: drowsiness and mild disorientation. Others include: dry mouth, diarrhea, vomiting, urinary retention, agitation, problems breathing, and lack of appetite. Some of the side-effects may be prevented. To prevent your pet from vomiting, give the medication with food. And to prevent appetite disturbances, feed your pet before administering the medication. In case of any side-effects, contact a veterinarian.

How to Administer Benadryl
I suggest placing the tablet or capsule into a teaspoon of peanut putter, it works every time for Gracie, however you can also try bits of meat; use liquid gel capsules that have been dipped into a tasty treat; rectal suppository; an injection. Most commonly, Diphenhydramine is taken orally, in tablets or capsules. Please contact your veterinarian to find out further information on the uses concerning Benadryl for dogs, and whether you can use it for your pooch.

Sometimes Paw licking can also be due to other more serious conditions like internal bacterial infections, severe anxiety, stress or even depression. I have found another source and solution to Gracie's paw licking at this site  Here you'll find a more though-out resoureful pool of info  to help you with your understanding of why your dog may be licking it's paws. These people have created a product called DermaPaw as a last resort, pure necessity for helping their own dog,  they make no claims, but ratter offer another alternative.  I feel it can only help, you be your own judge, after all... you know your Dog best!

Patrick The Pitbull’s Abuser's Arrest!

Stop Animal Abuse and Neglect... Speak Up!

Animal lovers from around the globe have been following the story of Patrick, the year old pit bull starved and abused. He was within hours of death when found. His story has touched the hearts of so many and has started a movement to stop the abuse & Neglect of poor defenseless animals!

Patrick’s owner was unknown at the time, and then there was a tremendous outcry to find the person responsible for the brutalization of this pup, and bring them to justice. Kisha Curtis was identified and arrested about a week later. It might have happened sooner, had the authorities listened to Mark Ortman, 42, who named her as a suspect as soon as he became aware of Patrick.

Thank You... Mark Ortman for doing the right Thing!

Miracle dog emerges from burnt house one month after devastating blaze

Lola is being treated with an IV hooked up to one paw.

Maybe some dogs have nine lives, too.
A pooch presumed dead after a raging house fire in Boston has miraculously emerged from the ashes one month after the devastating blaze.
Lola, a longhaired dachshund, is being treated for severe malnutrition but is otherwise doing fine, veterinarians nursing her back to health said.
"She's in tremendous shape given the ordeal she went through," said a vet treating Lola at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston.
Lola was home alone when the fast-moving blaze broke out. Her owner Terisa Acevedo, 24, arrived home to find her house in charred ruins and no sign of her beloved pet.
"It was so devastating for me," she told a local Fox affiliate. "I felt like I lost a family member."
Firefighters found no trace of the dog.
Acevedo papered her neighborhood with flyers seeking tips on Lola, but after a few weeks she gave up hope that her pup had survived the blaze.
She returned to her burned home Monday to turn off the alarm on a truck still parked there and heard scratching from inside the boarded-up house. It was Lola.
"I called out her name and she started crying," Acevedo said. "It was a miracle."
Lola was taken to the animal hospital Monday night, and a slow feeding regimen began Wednesday -- just 1 teaspoon of food every six hours to help refuel her emaciated body.
Vets said the tiny pup is "surprisingly upbeat" despite the traumatic fire and various medical treatments, which include an IV line hooked up to one bandaged paw.
Acevdeo said she is overjoyed to be reunited with Lola, who is not quite 2 years old.
"When I found her, it just made me think nothing else in the world can bother me right now," she said.

American Kennel Club Celebrates Irish Breeds in Spirit of St. Patrick's Day

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
To All My IRISH Four Legged Friends...

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, the American Kennel Club® (AKC) celebrates the loveable breeds of Irish descent. Notable Irish breeds include the Irish Setter and the Irish Water Spaniel, both of which share in AKC’s history. They were among the original nine breeds recognized by AKC at its inception in 1884.
Glen of Imaal TerrierGlen of Imaal Terrier— Glen of Imaal, which is a valley in the Wicklow mountains, is the region in Ireland after which this hardy breed is named. Longer than tall and sporting a double coat of medium length, the “Glen” possesses great strength and conveys the impression of a dog of good substance. This is a working terrier, who must have the agility, freedom of movement and endurance to do the work for which it was developed. Like its Irish counterparts, the Glen is also courageous, and always ready to give chase. When working, it is active, agile, silent and intent upon its game. Otherwise, the Glen can be a docile companion for families with older children.
  • For more information visit the Glen of Imaal Terrier Club of America at: www.glens.org
Irish SetterIrish Setter— Green may be the color of the Irish, but deep mahogany is the color of this four-legged beauty. The Irish Setter was among the original breeds recognized by AKC at its inception in 1884 and is part of the Sporting Group. Irish Setters have rollicking personalities and require a good amount of exercise to satisfy their breed instincts; they are tough and tireless field retrievers. They are also loving companion dogs who enjoy the company of children. It takes about three years for this breed to fully mature into adulthood, so if you’re considering bringing an Irish Setter into your home, you should be prepared for an active, fun-loving dog.
Irish TerrierIrish Terrier— This breed was featured in the 2007 movie “Firehouse Dog,” where it was cast as a canine hero. Not surprising, considering that Irish Terriers were used to transport messages between troops on the front lines in World War I. Their bravery and spirit make them incomparable pals, and they possess great tenacity. Loyal and friendly, Irish Terriers hardily adapt to any situation, and they are deeply committed to their owners. Irish Terriers served as longtime mascots for the Notre Dame Football team, providing halftime entertainment for adoring crowds. The Irish Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1885.
  • For more information visit the Irish Terrier Club of America at: www.itca.info
Irish Water SpanielIrish Water Spaniel— This breed was among the original 9 breeds recognized by AKC in 1884. It has been referred to as the “Shannon Spaniel,” the “Whip-Tail Spaniel,” and the “Rat-Tail Spaniel.” Distinguishing characteristics are a topknot of long, loose curls and a body covered with a dense, crisply curled liver colored coat, contrasted by a smooth face and a smooth "rat" tail. This ancient breed is a natural water dog. Irish Water Spaniels are devoted to their family and cautious around strangers. They are impressive dogs and possess an endurance quality which makes them equally agile in the water and in the field.
Irish WolfhoundIrish Wolfhound— While Irish literature refers to this ancient breed in many ways, including “Big Dogs of Ireland,” Irish Wolfhounds were documented in Rome in the year 391 A.D., where they were presented to the Roman Counsel as gifts, which “all Rome viewed with wonder.” No wonder-- they are the largest and tallest of the galloping hounds. Males should be a minimum of 32” tall and weigh 120 pounds; females should be a minimum of 30” tall and weigh 105 pounds. This is a swift breed which hunts by sight, and needs an ample, fenced yard to accommodate its full gallop. As in early times, Irish Wolfhounds possess an extraordinary social temperament, as well as the intelligence to separate friend, family and foe.
Kerry Blue TerrierKerry Blue Terrier— The “Kerry Blue” hails from the Irish county of the same name; he had been purebred in that section of Ireland for more than a hundred years. Known for his superior working and hunting skills, the Kerry Blue is used for hunting small game and birds, and for retrieving from land as well as water. Size doesn’t matter, for he is an unsurpassed watch dog and herder of flock. In some instances in England, he has even been used for police work. The breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1922, and came into the national spotlight when CH. Torums Scarf Michael won best in show at the 2002 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.
  • For more information visit the United States Kerry Blue Terrier Club at: www.uskbtc.com
Soft-Coated Wheaten TerrierSoft Coated Wheaten Terrier— A truly Irish breed, the “Wheaten” has a special connection to St. Patrick’s Day, having first appeared in the show ring at the Irish Kennel Club Championship on March 17, 1937. The name of this breed describes the characteristics of the coat—soft, silky, with a gentle wave, and of warm wheaten color. Underneath is a formidable dog that enjoys plenty of exercise every day. Most Wheatens are natural greeters towards people, and extremely alert in their surroundings. They are quick learners and love to travel with their owners. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1973.
  • For more information visit the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America at: www.scwtca.org
Irish Red and White
Setter Irish Red & White Setter—The Irish Red & White Setter became an official AKC breed in January 2009. This breed is thought to have emerged at the end of the 17th Century in Ireland, and is red and white in color, as opposed to the solid red Irish Setter. The history of the breed is as mysterious as the myths and legends of the country of origin. Its original purpose was as a versatile hunting companion, providing food for the table, both fur and feather. As companions, they are loving, loyal and best suited for a very active family.
For more information regarding these or any of AKC’s 170 breeds, visit www.akc.org.

The Scoop..... the Dog Poop!

It's everywhere you go!  Why is that? Are people that lazy in the winter or do they just not care...(consciously lacking consideration and responsibility for others)... or maybe falling on hard times has them cutting back on pickup baggies, sure why not blame this too... on the bad economy!

Well...Apparently...the city has been catching fewer dog poop rebellions, surprising,  as every other NYC ticket writing department has been raking in the revenue these days! Despite the increasing number of complaints,  the City has handed out half the amount of tickets as they have the year before.

Just a year after increasing the fine to $250 from $100 for dog owners who don’t pick up after their pets, (the city's ploy to deter the irresponsible from making the city sidewalks and park paths into dog poo landmines),  the Dept. of Sanitation issued only 580 fines, down from 903 the previous year. The deterrant plan isn't working! I actually think ...it has gotten worse! People take the chance, because face it...what are the chances of a city official catching them in the act. There are only 24 officers assigned to the K-9 unit, which also monitors for dogs off the leash as well as other related violations. Despite the cut backs in City jobs there hasn’t been a reduction in manpower within this department since the fines went up. The K-9 officers, cruise the city by car, starting out their days with a list of the trouble spots, which supervisors put together from complaints from 311 or off the city’s Web site. In fact, complaints to 311 have gone up. In 2009, there were 4,443 calls about dog waste, a three-year high.

The bottom line is.... “Whoever picks up after their dog is going to, regardless of the fine.” They'll do it because they are conscientious people, who know how to co-exist, who are considerate and well aware that feces carries disease! They take that very seriously,  as they do the responsibility of being a dog owner! I myself have come across several slackers ... turning the other cheek,  I simply confronted them with a bag! I think more Peer pressure might help.... Maybe more signs... (even though I'm not a big fan),  they do help educate people, especially of the sanitary issues! Hopefully it will get better and people will Scoop their poop and we'll start seeing less along the stoop!

CENTRAL PARK PAWS REPRESENTS DOG OWNERS

Central Park PAWS, a program of the Central Park Conservancy, represents the many thousands of dog owners who enjoy the Park every day. The mission of Central Park PAWS is to foster and maintain a dialogue between dog owners and the Park. The group provides a forum to address issues relating to dogs, dog owners, and other park users and to increase awareness of the privileges and responsibilities of dog ownership in the Park.
Through its educational and recreational programs and events, Central Park PAWS aims to strengthen links between the dog community and the Park, in order to give dog owners an opportunity to support upkeep of the Park and to strengthen mutual appreciation of the relationship between the Park and the dog community.
